LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)- For nine dogs, their journey is a lot longer than the 36 miles from Garrard county to Lexington. It's about ending up in their forever homes.

"It really makes you feel good to see their tails wagging after what they've been through, Ashley Holder of the Lexington Humane Society explained, while unloading some of the animals from a truck.

45 dogs were rescued from filthy conditions and neglect after a suspected puppy mill bust in Garrard County near Lancaster. Today, nine dogs from that seizure were brought to Lexington to get medical treatment and ultimatley get adopted. In addition to those pure bred poodles, the folks from Lexington took 2 kittens and 5 other dogs from the struggling shelter.

"We always do our best for animals in crisis situations, " Holder explained.

"The great thing about the Lexington Humane Society is once an animal is adoptable, we keep them until they get a home," explained Dr. Liz Ubelhor, the on-site vet as she checked out some of the dogs.
Many who came from the suspected puppy mill have medical problems, such as bad teeth and general poor treatment.

Officials say this is just one of many countless examples of the Lexington Humane Society pitching in during crisis situations for other shelters, but they say giving support to other shelters becomes more difficult when their own donations are down.

"We rely on community support to be able to care for these animals during the holiday season," Holder said.

So they're hoping to fill these boxes with donations and your dollars. You can take donations to the shelter at 1600 Old Frankfort Pike in Lexington. You can call 859-233-0044 to ask questions.
