Three Lexington businesses hit by robbers in one day

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) Some store clerks in Lexington are on alert after three businesses were robbed on Friday alone.

On Friday, a Burger King and a Cash Express were robbed at gunpoint but police say the store owner of a Marathon on Winchester Road actually shot the suspected robber.

The first robbery happened Friday morning when police say a man with a gun robbed the Burger King on Clays Mill Road.

Later that day, an attempted robbery took place at the Marathon on Winchester Road but this time, the tables were turned on the robber.

“An individual entered the store and attacked the store owner and the store owner shot him in self defense,” said Lt. Mark Brand with the Lexington Police Department. That man has been identified as 39 year old Larry Kreo. His condition has not been released.

The third robbery happened at the Cash Express on New Circle Road where the thief got away with $650.00 dollars in cash and the clerk’s car.

“The best way to handle that situation is to go ahead and comply with the request and do anything you can do to ease the tension," said Lt. Chris Young with the Lexington Police Department.

After this rash of robberies, we asked other clerks around town how they protect themselves in similar situations.

“Never argue with them, never try to fight with them, you could end up dead or hurt or stabbed,” said Brian Stipp, who is a clerk at a gas station in Lexington.

On Friday, we talked with Stipp about what precautions employees take to prevent being robbed.

“We always have two clerks working at all times and that’s very important when it comes to safety.”

Overall, he says the most important thing is to comply and let the cops handle the criminals.

“Their safety is first and foremost. A lot of time those folks are pretty anxious and we don’t want to make the situation worse,” said Lt. Young.

Lexington Police do not believe Friday's robberies are connected.
