HARRISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - One person is dead and four others are going to jail after a crash on Highway 36 West, just five miles from Cynthiana, according to the Sheriff's Office.
It happened around 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, where the Harrison County Sheriff reported a van lost control heading east on the highway. Investigators say it appeared the vehicle ran off the road, struck a tree, then went down an embankment hitting a telephone pole, and came to a rest upside down in the ditch filled with deep water.
The Sheriff said the five people inside the van had to be cut out of the wreckage, but the person sitting in the passenger seat likely drowned in the crash. The sheriff added that the passenger was wearing a seat belt.
The other four had to be treated, but the Sheriff said they have all been released from the hospital and are heading to jail for charges of alcohol intoxication.
Investigators are still working the crash, but at this time alcohol and wet roads are considered to be factors. The Sheriff said they are still working to identify the five people involved and his office may seek the help of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
