Above Pulaski County's football field the Maroon flag flies high. The reason being on the eve on Friday 16th, 2009, the Maroons won their first district title in the history of the program.
"Well, its kind of weird that we have never won district before with all the great teams we've had but, it felt pretty good being the first team to ever win, and be apart of that first team to ever get the actual district championship under our belt." said Maroons running back Alex Abner.
Unfortunately, the start of the football season was not so positive for Pulaski.
"Riding on a wet road at night, on a dirt bike, probably not a smart idea. Got hit, hit and run by a truck. Got off the bike, went to go run after the truck, first instincts, and then my knee gave out and i knew something was wrong." said Maroon linebacker Tyler Stone.
Tlyer, who led the teams in 2008 with 190 tackles had torn his P.C.L. ad L.C.L. ligaments in his left knee, and was diagnosed to be out for the entire football season.
According to Maroon Head Coach John Hines, "Tt was sickening feeling. Tyler is a tremendous player and he's also a very special person. Very special part of this program."
But during the offseason, Tyler worked hard on his rehab and found his way back to the football field.
"The rehab, starting off, was painful at first. And then you just put your eyes on the prize basically, and you have that goal in your mind that you want to reach and there is nothing that is going to stand in your way. Once you put your mind towards something. You are going to do it no matter what", said Stone.
But bad luck would strike twice for Pulaski when starting quarterback Chris Muse went down with a knee injury of his own.
"Well, when i first injured myself, i heard a pop, i knew something was wrong, but then again, i can get up and i can walk off the field and i'm thinking i get to play next week. (I) go up and i get the MRI and its, all this stuff's torn, and i was like ok. I asked the doctor, should i be able to do this? I ran down the hallway and cut, jumped on one leg, and back and forth, and he was like no. I don't know what's going on, but you shouldn't be able to. You probably shouldn't," said Muse.
So on the eve of Friday October 16th the Maroons took to the field with new black jerseys in honor of the ones who could not take the field. And that's when running back Alex Abner took matters into his own hands.
"It kind of came out of respect. We decided to this game to the all the injured players that didn't get to play in the game, so, felt like wearing Chris' jersey out of respect, his senior year." said Abner.
For the Pulaski County Maroons, Friday, October 16th, 2009 is not only the night they won their first district title ever, its is the night they finally became a team. One team, One heart.
