Police cracking down on drunk drivers across Kentucky

LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police across Kentucky say they're going to be more visible in hopes of getting more drunk drivers off the roads.

Police statewide, including those in Laurel County, kicked off their "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over" campaign Friday.

The increased enforcement leads up to the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Police say last year in Kentucky, more than 5,600 crashes were related to drugs or alcohol, leading to 150 deaths and more than 3,000 injuries.

"Thirteen deaths (in Kentucky) over the Labor Day period (last year)," Laurel County Sheriff John Root said. "Our goal is to saturate patrols in the county... high visible areas. It's been stated that just being visible can reduce the rates by 20 percent."

Police say if you are caught driving impaired, no warnings will be given out. You will be arrested.

The "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over" campaign continues through September 3.
