Bama reports secondary violations in football and basketball

Posted: 9:16 AM Aug 15, 2012

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama self-reported 27 secondary rules violations to the NCAA over the past 13 months, including six by the men's basketball staff and four involving football.

The university posted the violations involving 10 sports on its website Tuesday, dating from July 4, 2011. Five of the violations in men's basketball involved impermissible text messages to recruits, a restriction that was overturned in June.

The football violations included providing a scholarship check to an athlete before his certification, accepting two recruits' Facebook friend requests before the allowed date, texting a recruit's father and giving recruits impermissible documents.

Most violations brought letters of admonishment and rules education, but one football coach isn't allowed to make recruiting calls for 30 days and another can't contact two recruits for 60 days.
