JACKSON, Ky (WYMT) - Many of you have probably noticed construction projects popping up across the region. In fact, one in Breathitt County is finally getting underway after years of planning.

"Road Closed"

On Tuesday, that was the message greeting drivers passing by Lakeside Drive in Jackson. H.B. Elkins with the Department of Highways tells WYMT this construction is long overdue.

"It does pose a danger to the traveling public so in this instance, we have decided to go in and do some blasting and cut back that rock wall," said Elkins.

For several years, rocks like these have fallen on or near the road. Elkins said the nearly four million dollar repairs will serve the community well.

"I think the people will be very happy to see this done. They will feel a whole lot safer traveling through that area once the project is completed," said Elkins.

A detour has been set up for folks who live along Lakeside Drive. It takes them down Jett Drive, which comes out by the hospital in town. Elkins said the new route is not too far out of the way.

"It is maybe a mile longer for the people that live back there. It might take them a couple extra minutes in the morning or afternoon," said Elkins.

Weather permitting, Elkins said the road should reopen by December. He added that the construction, which started Tuesday on the Highway 15 Bypass in Hazard, is supposed to last about two weeks.
