JACKSON, Ky (WYMT) - Some Girl Scouts in Breathitt County are learning a valuable lesson this summer about helping others.
Troop 7166 is supporting a worthy cause this summer. The dozen or so members are collecting baby blankets to donate to the Ronald McDonald House in Lexington.
Summer is normally a time for fun and games enjoyed among friends. And if you ask Grace Clemons of Troop 7166, she will tell you that is normally what she does.
"We do crafts," said Clemons.
Her friend Callie Reno normally takes a trip.
"I usually go on vacation," said Reno.
But this year, Troop Leader LaDonna Jenkins said the girls are using their time off in a different way.
"A lot of kids are out here playing at the park or going on vacation. These girls are meeting once or twice a week sometimes to try to get these blankets together," said Jenkins.
The blankets will go to help those less fortunate. Jenkins tells WYMT the baby blanket drive is a way to teach her girls what community service is all about.
"This is a big deal for them to go outside of their home in Breathitt County and know that other people need help too," said Jenkins.
The message is catching on with Madison Young.
"We can donate baby blankets to other babies that do not have none," said Young.
Jenkins said hearing that makes all the effort worth it.
"They have accomplished so many things already and to continue throughout the summer when we could end at the end of the school year and they can enjoy their summer, they continue on with it," said Jenkins.
The troop plans to deliver the blankets they collect to Lexington on July 30th. If you would like to donate a blanket or cash to help their cause, you can call Troop Leader LaDonna Jenkins at 606-454-1344.
