HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Stepped up security is the latest measure taken after teens vandalized the Perry County Park over the weekend.

Harold "Rocky" Hudson, who is the chairman of the Senior Citizens Board, said he is still in shock after the Perry County Senior Center was broken into.

"Nobody is mad. It is sadness. It is a heartbreaking event for people to think they could do anything they wanted to and that nobody would care," said Hudson.

Over the weekend, teens vandalized the Senior Citizens Center and concession stand at the park.

"Different people come through, especially the city, and patrol this area a lot. We never suspected this would have happened," said Hudson.

But regular police patrols stopped earlier this summer and now that is making some question the park's safety.

Hudson said he is not asking for 24 hour security but he wants would-be-thieves to know that law enforcement is watching them.

Perry County Judge Executive Denny Ray Noble said that is exactly what new security cameras at the park do.

"We have put cameras all over the park in different areas. They are really not going to know what they are when they are going in," said Noble.

Noble added that those cameras helped catch the weekend intruders.

"They come in with gloves on and a toboggan then they get comfortable with the situation and they pull those off and look right in the camera. So they are caught," said Noble.

But given recent events, he said police will be back in the park for the time being.

"We have got the equipment in place to watch them. The county police is back in place. The Sheriff's Office will be back in place before long," said Noble.

The vandalism took place at night after the park was closed.

Noble said he made the decision to remove the regular police patrols in exchange for security cameras.

He said the fact that the teens were caught is proof the system is working.
