GRAY, Ky (WYMT) - April 15th is a date that is probably in the back of all our minds right now. Tax Day is right around the corner. But one Knox County agency is ready to help you make sense of all those forms.
If you have never filed on your own before and even if you have, there is nothing quite like that pressure of getting your taxes done.
KCEOC Community Action Partnership tax preparer Cheryl Dean said there is always anxiety attached to filing one's taxes.
"Everyone is scared of the IRS. I am scared of the IRS. You want to make sure that everything is accurate," said Dean.
KCEOC Advancement Manager Brandy Crase said that fear might be the reason so many folks are flocking to them for help.
"People work hard to earn their money and you know, we are fortunate enough to have volunteers in our area that are certified to do taxes and so they come in to help people save some of that money that they work so hard for," said Crase.
This tax service, which runs until mid-April, is designed for people who bring in less than $52,000 a year. Organizers tell WYMT the price tag could not be better.
"Completely free. No charges and we do the e-filing so you know folks will get their returns back pretty quickly," said Crase.
Staff advise preparation is key for a smooth appointment.
"Bring Social Security cards for everyone that you are planning to claim on your taxes. Birth dates. Form of ID. They will need to see a picture ID," said Dean.
Their last piece of advise is to stay calm.
"A lot of people are afraid that if a mistake happens, the IRS can come in and just take everything, which is not what happens," said Dean.
KCEOC's services are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. To schedule your own appointment, call 606-546-3152.
