LONDON, Ky (WYMT) - You could call it an exception to the rule. while many communities in our area continue to struggle, Laurel County serves as an example of what is possible in the region. County officials even admit they have more demand from businesses then they can keep up with.
The news is good for Laurel County's economy. Few know that better than Laurel County Industrial Development Authority Executive Director Charles Pennington.
"We provide a good home for anyone that wants to come to Laurel County. We constantly get inquiries about available buildings and property," said Pennington.
It is those inquiries that have Pennington and his team drawing up plans for a new industrial park.
Richard Hammons, who works for a company in another county industrial park, knows the importance of having a one stop shop for new businesses interested in the town.
"They come right in. We have what they need here. We have a very strong workforce here," said Hammons.
With the success of the area's current industrial parks, Pennington said he hopes the new park will continue that record of success stories in the county.
"It is between London and Corbin and it is a good location and it has good possibilities for everything that we need," said Pennington.
Hammons said that is exactly what businesses like.
"Everything is in place for that. The local infrastructure is fantastic and very accommodating," said Hammons.
Pennington tells WYMT they hope to purchase the property in a few weeks. The new industrial park will include around 50 acres of land and could add an additional 40. A loan approved by the fiscal court is helping finance the purchase.
