HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - If you are cold, help is available in Perry County. Perry County Schools Superintendent Jonathan Jett tells WYMT their high school gymnasium is open for anyone in need.

The slick conditions do not stop once you park at Perry County Central High School. Once you add in the high winds and snow, it is the perfect time to stay warm indoors. But Jett knows not everyone has the luxury to do that.

"If it is cold now, the conditions are probably not going to improve and you know, we have a place that is available," said Jett.

That is exactly the reason school staff decided to leave the John C. Combs Arena open.

"For anyone whose heat is not working properly or their electricity may be off, it just gives them an opportunity to come in and get out of the cold in a warm place," said Jett.

While people might not exactly like the idea of spending the night on hard bleachers, Jett said there is no denying it is warm inside, which is the most important thing.

"We always want to make sure that we are meeting our students primary needs first, but also anyone else in the community," said Jett.

He added that a custodian will man the doors all night, ready to let anyone who shows up in.

"They are welcome at any time. If they need a place to go, it will be open," said Jett.

The gymnasium has all the necessities, which include heat, bathrooms and water fountains. Jett said at this point they will keep the arena open until tomorrow morning for anyone in need.
