Pike County family struggles with high cost of prescription drugs

PIKEVILLE, Ky (WYMT) - The flu might make you feel crummy but the bill to kick it might make you feel even worse. Pharmacists tell WYMT just to get Tamiflu, a drug to treat the flu, on their shelves, it costs them more than $100. Then to make a profit, the price goes up even more.

When one of the Jason and Andrea Humphries' triplets came down with the flu, they did what any parent would do. They got a prescription to make him feel better.

"I was appalled to say the least, but I was not surprised at all," said Jason Humphries.

Almost one thousand dollars. That is the price these parents faced for Tamiflu, which is a brand name prescription doctors advise the whole family to take to make sure no one else gets sick.

"If we would have had to pay out of pocket, I would have done without, my husband probably would have done without it because he was not sick either," said Andrea Humphries.

Local pharmacist Jody Holland said decisions like that are a growing problem.

"Price is the number one, other than need. Price is the next thing that they go by and you really feel sorry for those people," said Holland.

The Humphries paid that bill thanks to a flex plan they opted for after down-sizing their health care coverage following the enactment of the Affordable Care Act. That plan is a resource they are glad they have but never expected to need.

"We do not want our kids to be sick like most people, but you know, there are some things that come up that what if we cannot afford it, it is scary. It is very scary," said Andrea Humphries.

Jason Humphries added he worries filling a prescription will come with constant concern from now on.

"As a middle class family, who we have been so blessed, with our boys, with our jobs, with our life, you know, I do not deserve this. But you cannot help but wonder is this the new normal for us," said Jason Humphries.

Jody Holland advises folks to price compare before filling a prescription. He said by doing that, often times you can save big.
