HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Hazard Police want you to keep an eye out! In the last few days, more than 20 counterfeit bills have shown up at banks across town.
Community Trust Bank Market President Janice Brafford-King tells WYMT that these are some of the best fake bills she has ever seen. She said the bank started finding the fake 50 dollar bills a couple days ago thanks to a money counting machine.
"These are much more difficult. They have a little bit of a different feel but they look exactly like a regular 50 dollar bill," said Brafford-King.
Hazard Police Sergeant David Wiseman is working the case.
"Everything is correct with the paper, watermark, everything," said Wiseman.
Both police and bank officials said this crime is unique because no businesses caught the counterfeits. That shows whoever is responsible found a way to fool the typical ways of testing for a fake bill.
"You cannot detect them with the pen so the business owners are at a real disadvantage," said Brafford-King.
That is why investigators are asking for your help.
"If somebody knows of anybody that is doing this, we would appreciate any kind of tip," said Wiseman.
The counterfeit bills are on their way to a United States Secret Service branch in Lexington for examination. Staff at the bank have shared the serial numbers on the counterfeit bills. They urge businesses owners in the area to check them out:
In addition to Community Trust Bank, we are told First Trust and People's Bank also found counterfeit bills. All have been 50 dollar bills.
