Man accused of texting cop about drug deal talks to WKYT from jail

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - On Thursday, we first told you about a Pulaski County man who was arrested after allegedly texting a police officer about a drug deal.

24-year-old Bretton Jones spoke to us from jail Thursday afternoon about the charges he's facing and why he believes he's been set up.

Bretton Jones says a text message is the reason he's behind bars. “I was innocent, I was set up,” Jones said.

Jones thought the text messages were just between him and his friend and he says the text messages contained conversations about his supposed friend buying drugs from him.

“It was the third or fourth time I’ve had a text message from this number in the past week.”

But the messages actually ended up being between Jones and the relative of an Irvin Police Officer, who then took matters into his own hands.

"I set up a deal with him. To make a purchase, set a price and a meeting place," said Captain Adam McKinney with Irvin Police.

The two parties were set to meet at Shopville Park near Somerset on Wednesday but a few minutes after Jones and his friend arrived, they were surprised to see that the person meeting them was actually a police officer.

“They found half an ounce of marijuana on me,” Jones said.

Sheriff’s deputies found Jones with less than 8 ounces of marijuana as well as a Soboxone pill. Although Jones says the pill wasn't his, he doesn't deny that the marijuana was.

As for how this incident has impacted Jones, he says he plans to get rid of his cell phone.

Bretton Jones has also been charged with resisting arrest.
