LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A man has been arrested in relation to a gas station murder that occurred Monday afternoon.
Lexington Police named the person of interest Tuesday afternoon as Travis Michael Bredhold, 18, shortly after they obtained an arrest warrant.
We haven't been told the details on how Bredhold was arrested, but our crew tracking the investigation says an officer recognized him at Fayette Mall and arrested him. He's charged with robbery and murder.
The victim was found when a woman went into the Marathon gas station Monday afternoon on Alexandria Drive, and found the clerk unresponsive behind the counter, with blood around him. Surveillance shows a man come into the store, point a gun at Patel, demanding money, then firing in a matter of just seconds. Lexington Police said he'd been shot in the chest and died at UK Hospital. Tuesday morning, the Fayette County Coroner identified that man as 51-year-old Mukeshbhai Patel. His friends know him as Mike.
Police say surveillance video captured Bredhold in the area around the time of the shooting. They say he was last seen in a gray Nissan car on Alexandria Drive heading toward Versailles Road. Bredhold was wearing a camouflage jacket, a dark-colored toboggan with red ear flaps, blue jeans, black gloves, and gray sneakers with a thin to medium build.
Tuesday, we spoke to the owner of the gas station. He says he and Patel's family are devastated, and they hope to see justice served soon.
The gas station owner says the shooting has left clerks at his other stations rattled, saying, "This morning at my other store, one of my employees called and she didn't really want to come to work. It really scared me. It really scares our employees. It really scares everybody when you hear about these things," Harry Singh, the store owner tells us.
Singh said he's never had any trouble at this gas station in the 6 years he's owned it.
"They are really heartbroken. It's really sad. It's sad for everybody. He was like a family to me. His family's really heartbroken. He's got two kids, a wife, his parents. They are really, really heartbroken," Singh continued. Singh says he's relieved an arrest has been made.
Officials with the Fayette County Detention Center tell us Bredhold has been in their facility twice since September, not including this most recent arrest. According to arrest records, he was just lodged there on December 4th, on an operating on a suspended/revoked license charge, as well as having no tail lamps. He was previously lodged there on September 18th, 2013, on two receiving stolen property charges, theft by unlawful taking charge, and a non-payment of fines charge. We're told Bredhold attended Martin Luther King Academy, and graduated last year.
Patel's autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Frankfort.
