Athletic Director admits to stealing more than $300,000 from NKU

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (WKYT) - $311,215.

That's how much Scott Eaton now admits to stealing from Northern Kentucky University.

Eaton was able to steal the money by defrauding the University from 2007 to 2013.

The schemes involved his NKU credit card. The biggest purchase was buying $262,000 worth of Kroger gift cards that he spent on himself.

The Attorney General's Department of Criminal Investigations handled the case.

"At a time when higher education institutions are being asked to accomplish more with smaller tuition increases and declining state funding, the reckless behavior exhibited by Scott Eaton is completely unacceptable," Jack Conway said.

Eaton also used his NKU credit card on $32,000 worth of charges for personal reasons.

So how did he get away with it for 6 years? That's the big question.

We do know it came to light last year when NKU President Geoffrey Mearns discovered Eaton had inappropriate relationships with employees and a student and fired him.

That led to an audit that discovered the stolen money.

Eaton's sentencing is set for may 20th in Campbell Circuit Court. He is eligible for parole after serving two years.
