LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Some counterfeit cash has been passed around a popular Lexington shopping center recently, and according to Lexington Police, they're some high-quality fakes.

Lexington police have received three fake $100 bills that they say came from the Target in Hamburg. Investigators with the Financial Crimes Unit say the bills are among some of the best that they have ever seen.

"The counterfeiters are getting good at the game and making it more difficult for the average business owner to catch on," says Sgt. Eric Hobson, with Lexington Police.

They have all security features on them, however, to the touch, the $100 bills feel a little bit waxy, and the threading is a different color than the real thing.

Police have images captured from surveillance cameras at Target of the three they say are responsible. At this point, they don't know who the people are, but they are looking for three men. We've attached their pictures.

"Trying to figure out who these guys are is a start. Possibly if they are local and somebody is having them pass the notes on their behalf so they don't get caught on camera. Maybe try to link the actual maker of the bills with these people would be a good start,"
says Sgt. Eric Hobson with Lexington's Financial Crimes Unit.

Police believe these counterfeiters are going up and down the east coast. Lexington Police are working with the Secrete Service to find these people passing around the fake cash.

Police are looking into the possible connection of some other counterfeit cash discovered off of I-75 at exit 104 and even some stores in Richmond.

So far, police only know of the three $100 bills passed at the Target, but believe there could be more in circulation. They're asking all local businesses to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. Police do not know if the bills are being made locally.

Hobson says, "It's possible there is more. With the high-quality that these are, I would not be surprised if there were more floating around out there."
