VERSAILLES, Ky (WKYT)-The house ransacked and according to Versailles Police, a safe was gone.
"That safe had approximately 30-thousand dollars and that was what was taken at this time," explained lead detective Wes Jones of the Versailles Police Department. "They are elderly, so it was a good part of their savings."
Detective Wes Jones of the Versailles Police Department says whoever got into the home on Troy Pike May 5th broke in through a window by the back porch. The brazen crooks did it about 11 or so in the morning.
Jones continued "Nothing else was taken at this time. Just from what was initially found. Where the safe was located, a few other things were rummaged through."
At this point, Jones and his investigative team don't know if the person or people responsible knew the couple and about the safe tucked away in a walk-in bedroom closet. They also don't know if the thieves were going through what they could and hit the jackpot. Either way, police say that thirty-thousand was a significant part of this couple's hard-earned savings and without it, will put a huge financial strain on them for the rest of their lives.
"We're just asking people that have any information to come forward and help us bring closure and an arrest to this horrible crime," Jones said.
