Police chief shoots suspect during western Ky. bank robbery

PRINCETON, Ky. (AP) - Authorities say a police chief visiting a western Kentucky bank shot and killed an armed man who entered the bank wearing a stocking over his head.

Kentucky State Police say Princeton Police Chief Don Weedman ordered the man to put down his gun, but instead the man fired at Weedman. Weedman returned fire and struck the suspect, fatally injuring him.

State Police Trooper Stu Recke says the suspect, who has not been identified, entered the Planters Bank in Princeton shortly after it opened at 8:30 a.m. Friday. There were about five people in the bank, mostly employees, and no one else was hurt.

Recke says Weedman "just happened to be there" when the man entered, carrying the gun and a tool bag.

Recke says the same bank was robbed Wednesday.
