McCreary Co. residents worried after rash of suspicious fires

WHITLEY CITY, Ky. (WKYT) - It’s not what was destroyed by fire in Laura Whitehead’s outbuilding Monday night that has her feeling a sense of loss, and fear.

“I don’t think anyone lost a whole lot of anything, but it’s a piece of you, you know,” she said, looking at her outbuilding that was reduced to rubble.

Whitehead says sleep eluded her all night, not knowing what was happening outside her Jenny Branch Road home, or what else was possibly burning.

“I’ve been up all night thinking they would come back. It ain’t safe no more you know. Don’t feel safe no more,” she said.

Moments before her outbuilding burned, firefighters were trying to save a vacant home a few hundred yards away. Then less than an hour later they were called to put out a truck fire, and then a garage fire on nearby Strunk Ridge Road.

Kentucky State Police are investigating but they say it’s too early to tell if all the fires are related but they say it's suspicious that 3 structures and one vehicle were all destroyed in a two-hour time frame.

The garage destroyed was used to store numerous valuables and odds and ends from several businesses. Heat from flames melted vinyl siding on a nearby house. No other homes were damaged but many are left thinking what could have been.

“I can’t tell you how it devastated me. Because I watched my son’s house burn, you lose so much,” said Whitehead.

Police did call a search dog and tracked a possible suspect into the woods.
