ANDERSON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A woman is indicted after Anderson County deputies say she embezzled tens of thousands from a non-profit animal rescue where she worked.

In September 2013, deputies got an embezzlement complaint from the Home at Last animal rescue in Lawrenceburg. They say the complaint found several irregularities involving checks that had been written to the treasurer, Melanie Aitken.

"Since she was treasurer, she had full access to that money with the organization and her own account," said Detective Sargent Bryan Taylor.

After an investigation, deputies say Aitken had allegedly embezzled money from the rescue.

"Everything that was taken was a donation," said Taylor.

According to deputies, a total of more than $69,000 was unlawfully taken over a three year period.

"It is a big hit for the organization," explained Taylor.

Aitken was indicted for three counts of theft by unlawful taking over $10,000 or more by the Anderson County Grand Jury. She was arrested and taken to the Shelby County Detention Center. We're told Aitken will be arraigned on May 20.

Home at Last has been around since 1997, offering lifetime care for any animal in need.
