Rescue effort for fallen hiker
Helicopter proves crucial in rescuing hikers
It took several hours but a group of hikers was safely rescued from a steep hillside along the Kentucky River near the Jessamine/Fayette County lines late Friday night.
The group of 7 men was hiking near Lock 9. One of the men fell down an embankment and landed near the water's edge. Other hikers climbed back up the hillside to get better cell phone service so they could call for help. They too ended up getting stuck.
Search and rescue personnel were called to the scene to assist but it was ultimately a Lexington Police helicopter that proved to be the best tool in the rescue effort.
The helicopter was able to utilize its FLIR thermal imaging camera to locate the group of hikers in the treacherous terrain. The flight crew was then able to guide a pontoon boat to the hikers. All of the hikers are okay. One was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
