Police Say Taser Saved Man's Life

They've been heavily criticized for their use in several high profile arrests across the country. Some claim they've even killed people.

But police in Georgetown say using a taser on a man Tuesday actually saved his life.

And officials say this is proof that tasers aren't as bad as some might think.

Police say around 3 Tuesday morning, they got a call about a man threatening to jump from a parking garage.

When they responded, officers decided the best way to keep the man from jumping was to shock him with a taser.

The 50,000 volt taser subdued the man, and he was brought to safety.

While some say there's plenty of negatives to using tasers, police say there are plenty of benefits too.

Georgetown police officers have used tasers for 2 years now. Officers say in the past, they've used tasers to save the lives of two other people threatening to commit suicide.

No Mark, they are not intended to be used as an alternative to deadly force. If you will check most department policy's, you find that tasers are fairly low on the use of force continuim. Prferably used before pepper spray becaue the pain that is caused stops in 5 seconds, not hours. They are used for uncooperative subjects, that are considered disorderly. Deadly force is met with deadly force.

I believe the use of tasers is leading to global warming like al gore, lets save the electricity and just shot them!!! oops bullets are made out of lead thats bad too, how about bows and arrows..oops we have to cut down trees for that sorry al.. well i guess its back to stoning criminals..

The problem with tasers is that more and more police officers are using them punitively, that is to punish suspects. They were not made to be used on someone who is mouthing off or generally uncooperative. The are to be used as an alternative to deadly force.

50 volts? Try 50,000 volts! There are MANY more benefits to a tazer than there are drawbacks. What's worse a 5 second shock or several strikes from a baton, pepper spray or worse? The Tazer is a relatively safe, effective way for officers to get a subject under control. The only ones who don't like it are the people who get it used on them.
