Appeals court hears arguments in wrongful death lawsuit against Shane Ragland

It's been 16 years since UK football player Trent DiGiuro was shot and killed.

On Thursday, court proceedings continued with no telling how long the legal battle will continue.

This time, the venue was the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

The court heard oral arguments in the DiGiuro family's wrongful death lawsuit against Shane Ragland, the man who admitted to shooting Trent DiGiuro.

In 2008, the DiGiuros won the wrongful death suit against Ragland and were awarded $63 million.

Ragland's attorneys are appealing the judgment, claiming the civil suit exceeded the statute of limitations and was filed too late.

They also argue the judgment was excessive.

"Every one of these hearings is a kick in the stomach," Mike DiGiuro, Trent DiGiuro's father said. "When someone says something you agree with, you smile. When they say something you don't agree with, you get mad. But we have learned to deal with it. It's something we have to do. We're the only ones out here fighting for Trent."

Over the next couple of weeks, the Court of Appeals hopes to have a decision made for the sake of both parties.

Ragland was not in court Thursday.

We're told his attorneys are prepared to take this case to the Supreme Court if the Appeals Court doesn't rule in his favor.
