A popular talking point for both incumbent Ernie Fletcher and challenger Steve Beshear during the hour-long debate, was ethics; each man said the other had none.

“Twelve ordinary citizens there, that listened to all the evidence, indicted 27 of this fella's political cronies and then indicted him too,” says Beshear.

“The way you handled Kentucky Central, you said everyone was made whole but there were thousands that lost their life savings,” says Governor Fletcher.

The candidates had opposite views about teaching intelligent design in schools.

“I think there's nothing wrong with teaching that, in fact, i think to teach that is part of our founding heritage and i think it's very important,” says Fletcher.

"I believe that science ought to be taught in schools and religion ought to be taught at home and in the churches and in the synagogues,” says Beshear.

They also took opposite positions on abortion, same-sex unions, and of course, casino gaming.

Beshear says, “We’ll realize about 500 million a year in new tax revenue that we can spend on education, economic development, and health care.”

“Almost two-thirds of that will be shipped out of state. That money will come out of the economies,” says Governor Fletcher.

Both candidates opposed the idea of a statewide smoking ban. Fletcher seemed amused at Beshear's questions about his administration's political troubles in Frankfort.

“Well first, Steve, you ought to know better. Back when you were there you used to have to change your registration from Democrat to even get a job,” says Governor Fletcher.

“As an old prosecutor once told me, Steve, when you're ahead just look up and say, 'I rest my case’” says Beshear.

Political scientists say they don't expect the debate to have a major impact on the governor's race. Some polls show Beshear is leading by 17 to 20 percentage points.

Neither Democrat nor Republicans are worth their weight in salt! All politicians are LIARS and are only interested in themselves. Neither party care about the taxpayers. Both parties would rather send our hard earned money overseas to people who don't pay a dime in taxes! I have no problems helping those who need help HERE IN AMERICA, but far too often, the government as a whole promotes laziness. If a person trys to work to get off welfare, then the government takes everything away from them, instead of helping them until they can make it on their own which would make them want to continue to work. As it is, these people can make more money NOT WORKING! And both parties are guilty of this! I'm not a party person, I do not agree with the philosphy of the Dems nor the Republicans. I vote for the individual. Which translated means I vote for the least of two evils in my opinion! Both parties stink to me as a taxpayer!

Republicans are FAR from greedy. But what IS greedy is the Democratic.. Socialists ways of wanting to take MY money and give it to people that dont deserve it. That is called redistribution of wealth and that is GREEDY!

Sorry to hear that Gail. Well... now you can take your hard earned money and get taxed to death so it will go towards the people that dont work. Not sure how you can be proud of a party like that.

Personally I would be ashamed to admit in a public forum that I was a REPUBLICAN... Look what your precious republican president has done to our wonderful nation! He took it from a Democrate that had the nation on a good footing and kicked it back down to its knees begging again...! Don't blame it on democrats! Blame it on greedy republicans that want everything for themselves! I work hard for what I have and got it on my own! I haven't asked for hand outs and I am a Democrat and PROUD! of it!

Sorry c in fkt: with Democrats in office people get the help the expect because they don't want to get off their sorry (edited) and get a job. Spike Lee thinks the same way. Read his post thoroughly; he wants something for nothing. Liberals are nothing but social program hungry for those who don't need or deserve it. Let's give it to EVERYBODY is their motto. It doesn't make people want to try and get things on their own. I don't agree with Fletcher either, but you can't make a case that one is better than the other. Republicans can't fix years of what the Democrats screwed up in 4 years and if it was the other way around, I'd say the same thing. All politicians want your vote then when they get in, all they care about is special interest money because that helps with their re-election campaign. Everybody wants a change but nobody votes for Gaitwood. Is he the savior? Maybe not, but he would have been worth a try.

You've got to be kidding. Democrats are the ones who ALWAYS raise taxes. Now who pay's taxes? The working class people. Now of course your going to now say only the rich get tax cuts,so who owns business? The rich, and who offers employment? The business. Cut taxes on the "rich" and they can pay more to their employ. Democrats are for the working man...please.
