There are hundreds of parents across eastern Kentucky who aren't paying child support and for many it may be because they simply don't have the money.

Some say there's something else that keeps them from paying up.

Bell County Child Support Officials say trying to force parents to pay up wasn't working.

So they're now trying a new approach and they say by taking away the fear of jail time they're now getting parents to pay up.

Jerri Green says she finally came in to pay child support because of an ad in the paper.

Bell County child support officials are offering child support amnesty.

Even if a parent has an arrest warrant out for them they can come in pay at least part of the child support that's due, but they won't get locked up.

It was that fear that kept Jerri from paying, “The thought of going to jail andbeing away from my kids even more.”

Jerri paid one hundred dollars and with the promise she'll pay more soon.

Her arrest warrant will be gone.

Child support officials say they've gotten a huge response.

“We've had them come in all week! One guy owed nine thousand dollars and had never paid up until this week,” Tonyia Miracle said.

This child support amnesty program is going on all week at the private law office of Bell County Attorney Neil Ward

Officials say after this week they'll be happy to work with parents.
