Students Outraged Over Political Cartoon

Hundreds of UK students are outraged, and demanding apologies after a political cartoon they call racist appeared in the student newspaper.
Students protested outside the Kentucky Kernel Friday afternoon.
The article showed a half-dressed black man being auctioned off to thee white fraternity men.
A spokesperson for the UK says that the Kentucky Kernel is an independent publication, with the right to publish what they want.
The spokesperson also says that students, as American citizens, have the right to protest.

get over it. black people are always making fun of white people and we don't get offended over it. if black people really didn't want to be called (edited) and stuff of the sort they would stop calling themeselves that in rap videos and calling each other that. u dn't see us getting upset because there is a united negro fund and not united caucasian fund for college.

You people will never understand. It's not all about "getting over it". Of course not everyone is going to think alike but when I read some of your posts, I just sit back with astomach ache. You all talk about getting over it...Until you or any of your family members have been denied, directed out of, or anything because the color of your skin, you will never understand the magnitude of a cartoon like this. 3 brothas auctioning off a 1/2 naked white dude isn't controversial because "IT'S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE". But this image has happened before plenty of times. yes it was in the past but it has happened...So sorry for being a "little" concerned about something like this. It's called being cautious because there are still people out there like this or at least still believe this type of crap should still exist...some are obviously on this blog!!! Oh yeah, let me know when you all are as offended by a word like cracker I guarantee you that it doesn't have the same impact as the N word...

Most of you miss the point. No one is challenging anyones freedom to speak. To say that something is inappropriate, dehumanizing, hateful, and unnecessary is not the same as saying it should be illegal. No one is saying the cartoonist should go to jail. People are just pointing out that it causes more bad than good and that civilized educated individuals can find better more effective ways to communicate a point.

By the way, that "cartoon" was disgusting, tasteless and racist. And, in response to Tyler and Kelly, in case you haven't noticed, us "Whiteys" have not endured the history of racism, slavery, segregation, etc. that our African American brothers and sisters have had to endure. As such, slanderous comments don't hit as close to home. Maybe the bulk of the posters on this forum need to "get over it and drink a cold one" instead of the protesters who are admirably voicing their outrage to this ridiculous mistake...

After reading all of this drivel, Nathan from London makes the most sense. How P.O.'d did everybody get when the sports commentator made fun of Georgetown and Kentucky? Freedom of speech is a great and wonderful thing, don't get me wrong, but how would you all like it if you were referred to constantly as inbred, redneck, hillbilly, toothless, non-shoe wearing crackers, or any other derogatory term that may apply? Granted, we all have Freedom of Speech, but we also have the ability to use a little discretion and tact. Maybe we should try it a little more often...

Maybe the guy on the box is supposed to be making a rap video. I hear a lot of rappers don't wear shirts. Just a guess

I agree with Kelly from Waynesburg. No one gets offended when white people, rednecks, christians, and republicans are offended or made fun of. The media (especially the Lexington "Herald-Liar") offends these groups all the time. So what makes the Blacks and the Democrats any different? It doesn't matter who it is, everyone is going to be offended at some point in time. Its the nature of the world we live in. Get over it and go drink a cold one!
