With all the bad news about coal mining lately, managers at one local coal company say they have some good news to share.

MSHA officials say the nation's safest coal processing plant is right here in eastern Kentucky.

WYMT’s Angela Sparkman visited the Premier Elkhorn Coal Plant to learn how they recorded the country's best safety record.

Knowing the job hazards, workers at Premier Elkhorn's Coal Burke Branch Tipple still enjoy coming to work each day.

Last year, the 79 workers recorded 151-thousand 970 hours without an accident.

MSHA noticed and said it was the best 2006 safety record at a coal prep plant in the entire country.

They received the Nation's top Sentinel Safety Award.

Coal officials say it isn't easy with all the welding, cutting, hammering, and climbing.

Trophies aside, workers say the only reward that matters is,

The traveling trophy also has a history.

It was created by an Italian sculptor in the 1920s and stays at each winning plant for a year before it's passed to the next winning coal plant.
