Kentucky Kernel Prints Apology

Depicting U.K. students as slave traders in a political cartoon was wrong. That's the word from officials at The Kentucky Kernel, the University of Kentucky's student newspaper.

Friday, the Kernel ran a political cartoon featuring a black man, shackled to an auction block, being bid-on by fictitious Greek organizations.

It sparked student outrage, and protests in the streets.

Today the paper printed the following apology:

"We should not have published the editorial cartoon in Friday's Kernel. A large part of the student body and the community was rightfully offended. Neither the cartoonist nor the editors at the Kernel intended for the cartoon to be hurtful. But our intentions are irrelevant. The cartoon unnecessarily hurt many of our readers, and I apologize for it being published."

This story is horrible. The cartoon did not depict UK students as slave traders. It depicted the UK Greeks as minority bidders. But we don't see the Greeks out protesting. They're content to hide in the shadows and avoid any potential commentary on their sorry history of minority exclusion. Point missed again.

I don't really feel that the Kernel should of apologized Freedom of speech is something were all granted and if they meant no harm to it then why is everyone blowing it up, if you don't like what they publish then simply don't read it!
