Kentucky Grocery Workers Reject Kroger Contract Offer

CINCINNATI (AP) - A new three-year contract proposal from Kroger has been rejected by Cincinnati area supermarket workers, including employees in northern Kentucky.

The workers voted last night to turn down the proposal, which would have increased health insurance costs for employees.

Leaders of the United Food and Commercial Workers union had urged rejection of the offer, giving membership the authority to call a strike if future negotiations don't progress.

Union leaders say the proposal by Cincinnati-based Kroger also offered subpar wage increases.

The union didn't release vote totals but said Kroger's offer was rejected by 98 percent of voters, and turnout was strong.

The union represents eleven thousand employees in 77 stores.

I work part-time for Kroger to help pay college tuition for my children. Kroger employees DO NOT need a union. Grocery store work is not hard work. The only thing a union does is give crappy employees an out if management wants to get rid of them. There is no incentive to work harder if everybody is paid union scale. I'm at the top of the wage scale for part-time employees because I have been there for quite some time. Management has told me they would love to pay me more but can't due to union scale. Employees only have to perform the bare minimum in their job so there is no incentive to work harder; management can't do anything to them. Union dues for me are 6 bucks a week; I'm not getting 6 bucks worth of anything from a union. Unions HAD a place in time but are not needed anymore. Ever see a Union Representative driving a Hyundai or some cheap car. Hell No! We are paying for a good lifestyle for them and get nothing in return. UNIONS SUCK!
