Jury Returns Verdict In Powell County Murder Trail

A Powell County jury found Shannon Burgher guilty of murder and kidnapping after about an hour of deliberation on Friday afternoon.

Prosecutors say Shannon Burgher ran his estranged wife, Donna, off the road near Stanton and then shot her to death. Prosecutors also say he set her house on fire.

Both prosecutors and defense attorneys presented closing arguments on Friday afternoon following the three day trial.

Defense attorneys didn't deny that Burgher shot his wife, but asked the jury to consider his mental state at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors played a tape of Donna Burgher's frantic 911 call after she had been shot. They want the jury to find Shannon Burgher guilty of the maximum charge of murder.

The jury got the case at around 5:00 on Friday and returned that verdict at just after 6:00.

We have a crew in Powell County and we'll bring you all the details, coming up on 27 NEWSFIRST at 11.

Better than he deserves. By the way, it was his exwife ( just finalized) and he was not happy about the divorce or the new man in her life. Funny how exwife does not get into the media. Mother of his daughter Meagan. If he could not have her than he made sure no one could not even his daughter. Donna was just happy to get away from him. Abusive relationships never end well. I just keep praying for Meagan. I hope she can find some normalcy and learn what healthty love and relationships are. As for Shannon may he get the justice he deserves in Prison with his pretty little face. Kudos to the Burghers for raising such a fine son. I hope they do not get to influence Meagan. She had enough of their damage.

Just like a defense attorney, mental state? People who commits murder don't have much of a mental state to begin with! What about the wife's mental state after being shot? This man sure wasn't thinking about anything but himself! I'm glad the jury found him guilty! Now he will spend the next 20 yrs appealling the decision and will probably be out of prison in just a few years! He should get the death penalty and be executed within the next year! But this is America, where you can kill others and still live yourself! Not much JUSTICE in the USA today! We baby the criminals and ignore the victims and their families! The criminals have ALL the rights while the victims have NONE!!
