One Of UK's First Black Students Honored As Pioneer

LEXINGTON, Tenn. (AP) - Doris Wilkinson's career at the University of Kentucky is being honored.

Wilkinson was among the first group of black students to enter UK and is now a sociology professor who has been nationally recognized for her work in race and ethnicity, organizational sociology and medical sociology.

The university has named a conference room in Breckenridge Hall in Wilkinson's honor and has begun a campaign to establish a distinguished professorship of sociology in her name.

Wilkinson founded the university's African-American Studies program and served as its first director.
