Woman Fit To Stand Trial In Quadruple Murder Case

A judge ruled on Thursday that a Jessamine County woman is competent to stand trial for the deaths of four people.

Police charged Melissa Helton with murder after a fiery crash in back in August of last year. Investigators say she was driving drunk when she crashed, killing three children and one adult.

On Thursday, defense lawyers and prosecutors met behind closed doors for more than an hour. In addition to the competency ruling, attorneys for Helton also asked for a change of venue. They say they don't think she can get a fair trial in this area because of intense media coverage.

Helton will be back in court later this month to learn whether or not the judge will grant that change of venue request.

Her trial was supposed to begin earlier this month but was delayed because of Thursday's competency hearing.

She should be charged harshly. Set an example by her. She CHOSE to drink, she CHOSE to drive. She murdered those poor innocent children. This case should make parents be extra careful who you allow your children to go with. Know that person and know their lives. It would be different if she wasn't drinking and just lost control of the van, but this woman CHOSE to drink and drive. I think with as much publicity about drinking and driving as there is, she knew it was wrong and decided to do it anyway. Those poor children. Don't move her trial, have it right here in Jessamine County. Let her get justice for her crime. She's already had a year more in this world than the innocent kids.

C, I was RAISED by drunks, and if you'd ever seen one go through withdrawal, you'd know alcoholism is a disease. BUT-That doesn't mean you drink and drive. This woman DOES deserve to be charged with murder, whether the other adult was drunk or not is irrelevant, because she's dead. This woman can cry that she's sick and incompetent for trial all she wants, she knew she shouldn't have been driving, and four people died and their families destroyed because of her poor choice. I don't see how she's lived with herself, she should save the taxpayers some $$ and kill herself.

There are questions that have not been answered in this case. Was the other adult also drunk? If not, then why wasn't she driving instead of the drunk? How much blame can be placed on the other adult in the vehicle. If she wasn't drunk also, then should have never allowed this woman to drive lease of all allow her children to ride in that vehicle with a drunk driver! I am by no means condoning what this woman did. She took 4 lives because of HER bad habit and she needs to be punished for it! Why was there a competency hearing? Did she think because she's a drunk that she isn't responsible for what she did or what? The change of venue should be denied. Do they think that people in another county hasn't heard or read the news about this woman or what? Besides, this is KY, she won't get anything out of this anyway! KY says "poor drunks" they need help and are not responsible for their actions. HOGWASH! It's a choice not a disease! I lived with drunks and they CHOOSE to drink! No mercy Here

I do not agree with this woman drinking and driving but she did not set out to murder anyone and her charges should be vehicular manslaughter, not murder. Laws need to be consistent and I have seen many only get vehicular manslaughter, why is this woman being charged so harshly?
