Kentucky Church Sends Support Letters To Britney Spears

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A Lexington church is trying to send letters offering support and love to troubled pop star Britney Spears.

The letters offer messages such as, "Britney, Jesus loves you. The congregation of Southland Christian Church loves you as Jesus loves you. We are praying for you."

They were the brainchild of Southland Christian Church pastor John Weece. Weece says the idea came as he watched repeated reports of Spears' spiral into drug rehabilitation and the loss of her children.

So in a sermon and in a September 19th blog on the church Web site, Weece asked his congregation of nearly eight-thousand people to put together a box of letters for Britney.

Weece says Spears had made (quote) "devastating life choices."

The church's director of communications, Cindy Willison, says the letters were still being collected on Friday and church officials were looking for the best way to get the mail directly to Spears.

I do not attend SCC but I know they have helped me and countless others with clothing, furniture, etc. I think they are a wonderful group of folks and whether they do for someone here locally or try to help someone out in another part of the world is their business. We are supposed to be a light for ALL of the world...not just pick and choose. Jesus sure doesn't pick and choose and who are we to do so. A person who is lost no matter who they are needs us to help them find their way...whether someone listens or not is their choice but at least the seed of love & Christ has been planted. Even the rich and famous need love and to be saved and I don't see what the big deal is about SCC reaching out and trying to reach her or anybody else.

You might want to check out the facts on the medical clinics--give Southland a call.

If Britney didn't need to be reminded that she is loved before, after I've read all of these hateful comments, now I am sure that she does. Way to go Jon and SCC for trying to make a difference! (And they ARE opening a medical clinic in Lex, a couple of them I think. The buildings have been purchased and staffed and are currently being renovated)

I just wanted to correct one thing--Southland has not opened a medical clinic in Lexington.

wow,it's pretty bad when the world has a problem with a church trying to help somebody. Famous or not,she is still a person. What everybody should be questioning is why nobody has tried to reach out and offer help and support before. But instead all you do is judge and badmouth a man and thousands of people who care. If you have a problem with love, maybe the real person you should be judging is yourself.

SR is right. No one today is being responsible for their choices and actions. It is always excuses, excuses and even more excuses. "i did this because i am..." blah blah blah. i am sick of all the idiotic people. seriously. get over yourself. Southland is a wonderful church. I bet all of you who are hating on this church have never been there. guess what?? I DARE YOU TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!1

If you have never been to Southland or researched Southland and you are judging because you merely saw a news story or read an article you are being irresponsible by commenting without facts. Southland does help people in their own backyard as well as those beyond. I personally have been helped by the church. I am not a member but attend the church weekly. They are paying for over 50% of the cost for me to recieve christian couseling because I cannot afford the full cost. Tell me, is that not helping people in their own backyard? And what about the building literally in their own backyard where families in need can go and for free get a car, clothing, appliances, etc.? And what about the free health clinic they opened and their current focus on raising money for children in Haiti? This church is amazing, I have been blessed as well as many others I know. God is truly working through Southland in their own backyard, in the world, and hopefully in offering love and support to Britney.

Britney was born in a believing community. At first she gave God credit for her "success". I agree that she's made devastating life choices. I also agree that today's society allows excuses for everything. There's a song by Casting Crowns, "Does Anybody Hear Her?". The first time I heard it was the day that Britney shaved her head . . . It sounded like they were singing about her. She's definitely lost in a downhill spiral, but that's why Jesus died for us, right? She's not the only one on that road, but to reach out to her is an awesome display of God's love. I just hope everybody's also praying. God hears His people even if Britney doesn't read her mail.

As an active member of SCC I want to publically stand behind Jon for asking the congregation to send letters of love and support to Spears. What you don't know is how much Southland DOES do for the community. We send letters of love and support to people and families around the world on a regular basis. The moto at Southland Christian is: Love God Love People We find unique ways each and every day to live the moto. Can I invite ANYONE who reads this post to attend a service, just one, visit Connection Point after the service, THEN decide if loving people like Brittany is consistant with everything else the church does...I promise if you look beyond this simple story you will find a body of Christ followers who honestly want to Love People like God does. Church Services are held Sat. 5:30 Sun. 8:80 10:00 11:30 6:08 You dont even have to dress up!

I have been going to Southland for 5 years. Believe me when I say Southland and Jon Weece did not do this for publicity. Southland does many things to help out the people of Kentucky as well as all over the world. Everyone who thinks it is a publicity stunt is incorrect. Southland never contacted any media outlet. Someone must have told them that was at the service that day. Jon Weece considers it an honor to be the pastor of Southland. Everyone that knows him knows he is for real and has a big heart. Describing Southland as a Megachurch is just funny!!! There are many reasons so many people attend Southland, too many to describe. My suggestion is to visit Southlands website or contact the church. If you think it was for publicity reasons go to the website and listen to the service Jon did that day and you will then know the real truth, not word of mouth. God has given Jon a gift that if you know him you will find out.
