Central Kentucky Man Preys On 14-Year-Old Girl

A Franklin County man faces charges tonight after police say he had sex with a 14-year-old girl he met online.

22-year-old Gary Smith allegedly met the girl on MySpace.com.

Commonwealth's Attorney Larry Cleveland says the two exchanged e-mails and instant messages, before meeting for sex.

Cleveland says this crime falls under a new statute that makes it illegal to use a computer to find a victim for sexual assault.

Cleveland also says this type of crime is on the rise.

Smith is facing rape, sodomy, and other charges. He could be sentenced to up to 20 years in jail.

He is scheduled to be in court tomorrow.

OH COME ON C in Fkt!! Don't lay all of the blame on the computer. "Who would have thought of such a thing 10 years ago?" Where have you been? True kids didn't meet up with adults over the internet back then...but they DID meet up. We are in a hyper sensitive society that thinks everything is new.

Thankfully they caught this guy! Computers are now weapons to be used by criminals!! Who would have thought such a thing 10 years ago! Just goes to show that anything can be used for good or evil!

Ok-any fourteen year old knows better than to exchange emails and messages with someone they dont know. It's been talked about enough on TV that even if her parents didn't talk to her,she should've had better sense.Let alone meeting him! That being said,he is the adult, and he knew full well he was taking advantage of her.Hope they give him everything the law allows, and I hope the girl has learned to use some common sense online, and in her life in general.
