Mayor Meets With Immigration Commission

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry dismissed two recommendations made by a commission on immigrants minutes after receiving the panel's report.

Newberry says he won't back giving I-D cards to undocumented immigrants in the city. He also says whether immigrants should get driver's licenses is a state matter and he won't dwell on it.

One of the nine commission members is Transylvania University sociology professor Brian Rich, who says he hopes the group's work
doesn't go ignored.

The panel began meeting in June to study how Lexington could deal with immigration.

Rich says the report has differences of opinion, but the panel talked about many important community issues in making its seven recommendations.

Well, Well, Well: what you people are so obviously not getting is the FACT that in just a matter of a few more years the Hispanic population will be greater than the white population. And we are talking about 100% Legal hispanics that were born here in the USA and are natural born citizens. Nothing can be done to stop it and any politician who ignores it is in essense an IDIOT!! All you prejudice people should be the ones who are booted out of here because you so obviously don't get what are great country is all about. I can't believe we still have so many morons in this state!!!

I have 3 letters for the Immigration Comission I.N.S., then there will be no need for this silliness because the illegals will be back home where they belong!

Newberry rejected only two of the most blatant and stupid suggestions. He accepted the recommendation that local law enforcement will not enforce Federal immigration laws....meaning the local cops will not arrest or contact ICE or Federal law enforcement if they come in contact with an illegal. This shud have been rejected as well. When does Illegal not mean Illegal? I have as much compassion for others as anyone but once you start selectively enforcing laws based on your own "financial interests" the laws become worthless. What do we want to be..another 3rd world country like Mexico or Venezuela or Bolivia or Pakistan..or?

It is ridiculous that the Mayor appointed this Commission, had them work very hard for months listening to the public and to many experts on a wide range of issues, had them submit their report to him, and then has already decided to oppose their two most important recommendations. It shows a lack of respect of the Commission and their months of hard (and unpaid) work. It also shows that his only concerns are political ones, as he had already made up his mind before ever receiving hte report. As Justice Keller told him point blank today, Mayor Newberry cannot continue to ignore the thousands of undocumented people who live in Fayette County and who are essential to our economy. It's time for the mayor to do what is right and work to implement ALL of the commission's recommendations!!
