Church Snakebite Victim's Family Sues Hospital

The family of a woman who died, after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service in London, has filed suit against Marymount Medical Center.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports, the lawsuit states that instead of providing proper care for 48-year-old Linda Long, hospital staff made derogatory comments about her religious beliefs.

Long was bitten on the face by a rattlesnake during a service at East London Holiness Church in 2006.

Long's family says as she struggled to breathe, hospital employees continued to joke, even giving her a portable fan when she asked for oxygen.

Long was airlifted to UK Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

i disagree with everyone here. this is my family religion we are talking about and i don't agree with this family suing. they are dragging the church down, along with themseleves, what would this lady think of her family??? are we not taught to forgive as christians? if we can't forgive then can we be forgiven??? their are many questions here and many more opinions. i believe that people of every religion will make it to heaven, as long as they live by what God teaches them personally. He may condemn me of something and not you. that gives me no right to judge you. be careful here people or you will be in hot water.

OKAY...FIRST OF ALL...SOMEONE DIED, IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW SHE DIED, SHE DIED. HER FAMILY IS GRIEVING, AND IF ANYONE HAS LOST A LOVED ONE, YOU KNOW HOW THE FAMILY FEELS. THEY FEEL THAT SHE WAS MISTREATED, THERE ENTITLED TO A LAWSUIT JUST AS EASILY AS YOU PEOPLE CAN WRITE AND MAKE FUN OF HER. HER FAMILY IS GRIEVING, THEY BELIEVE IF PROPER CARE HAD BEEN USED, SHE MIGHT STILL BE HERE. AS FOR THE HOSPITAL IF THEY MADE FUN OF HER, THEY SHOULD BE FIRED. THEY ARE THERE TO PROVIDE HEALTHCARE, NOT THIER OPINION. I'M NOT SAYING I AGREE WITH SNAKE HANDLING, I'M JUST SAYING THEY COULD HAVE A CASE. SO FOR ALL OF YOU OUT THERE THAT ARE MAKING FUN, IMAGINE THE PERSON CLOSEST TO YOU TRIED TO KILL THEMSELVES, INSTEAD OF THE DOCOTORS TRYING TO SAVE THEM THEY MAKE FUN. WOULD YOU FILE A LAWSUIT? MY OPINION IS THAT EVERYONE SHOULD MIND THIER OWN BUSINESS, IF THE WOMAN HADN'T DIED THE WAY SHE DID, NO ONE WOULD EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE CASE. SO WHAT I'M SAYING IS SHUT UP AND LEAVE THE FAMILY ALONE!

First off. No one really knows if the hospital was making fun of the women. They're simply suing. I see tons of lawsuits that are based off of nothing. Aren't Christians suppose to forgive? I mean just because someone died dosent mean its okay to forget values and become money hungry. Also, RUBY from Pikeville...its "DUMB" not "dum".

When this family filed this lawsuit, they just opened themselves up for more and more ridicule. Why don't they just let it go, and let this poor woman rest in peace? Aren't we as christians supposed to obey the laws of the land??? And another thing, reckon they killed the snake or just put it back in the box for the next service?

I HAVE READ ALL OF THESE STATEMENTS AND NONE OF THEM REALLY MAKES ANY SENCE TO ME SOME PEOPLE ARE JOKING,SOME ARE JUDGING AND SOME ARE JUST PLAN DUMM. I AM NOT THE SMARTIEST PERSON,BUT ONE THING IS FOR SURE THESE PEOPLE NEED TO STOP WORRING ABOUT WHOSE FAULT IT IS OR WAS AND START PRAYING FOR THEIR SELFS AS FOR MY OPINION IF THIS HOISPTAL WAS MAKING JOKES AND FUN OF THIS CHURCH FAMILY THEN I THINK THEY SHOULD BE SUED AND HOPEFULLY THE JURY OR JUDGE IN THIS CASE CAN PUT ASIDE THEIR OWN BELEIFS AND JUST LOOK AT THE FACTS. AS FOR THE FAMILY OF THE LADY WHO DIED MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU. BY THE WAY I NEVER DID READ THE PART THAT SAID THEY WERE SUING BECAUSE THEY (THE HOISPTAL) CAUSED HER DEATH JUST THAT THEY WERE MAKING FUN AND JOKING!! READ THE NEWS AND THEN MAKE YOUR DUM AND STUIPD COMMENTS!!!!!!

i to am in healthcare have been for many years. and healthcare workers I'm sorry to say can come across as unfeeling at times especially when you are already upset such as with this case , a death in your family, maybe you should question how money is going to help. if specific workers made comments or didn't do their job then fire them talk to administration and have them held accountable but sueing the hospital is just going to raise healthcare higher than it already is. my heart goes out to the family.but i can't see how sueing the hospital is going to help.Don't punish everyone for something that you say a few workers said or done. FILE A COMPLAINT NOT A LAWSUIT.

This lady made a costly mistake. She did what she believed in and she paid the ultimate price.I personally don't condone it but that is my belief.Everybody interprets the bible differently, thats what makes us unique.Try putting youself in her shoes. If you were lying there dying because you decided to drink and drive and wrapped your car around a tree you would want medical staff to do everything possible to save you.Only those who were present that night really knows what happened ,however IF the ER staff did make some rude comments then they should be punished. However, I do not think that they should lose their jobs.I read another comment on here that I think makes a lot of sense. If she did not go directly to the hospital then there was very little chance of saving her anyway but EVERYTHING that could have been done should have been done without regard to how this tragedy happened.
