Study Says Kentuckians Would Approve Tobacco Tax Increase

Kentucky has one of the lowest cigarette taxes in the country, but a new study says many here would support an increase!

The study from "Opinion Research Associates" says 60 percent of Kentucky voters want a tax increase.. of at least 75-cents per pack.

Right now, the tax is 30 cents per pack.

The study says the increase would curb cigarette use among children while giving the state more revenue.

Many groups, including the American Cancer Society, plan to lobby for the tax increase during next year's general assembly.

Yes, Fran in Knott County..I believe it too. It is funny that they always say "the majority of voters" or "60% of voters"...and most of us have never heard of any poll on this..I sometimes believe they use the same people on these various "polls" they develop, just to keep getting the answers THEY want.

They will never tax beer or alcohol because most of the lawmakers drink. Most of them do not smoke so thats where they want to put the tax. Every time you turn around they want to tax cigarettes. I dont know of anyone involved in that poll. I never even heard of it until I seen it on here. I think that they chose the people who dont smoke to take the poll. Does anyone else believe this?

Who were your 500 people who voted on tax increase for cigarettes and where do they live; just in Lexington. People are always willing for taxes if they don't have to pay.

If the tax would actually go to what it is intended for, it would be different. Maybe to help get better insurance for children without any..I would also like to know which KY voters voted for an increase in cig tax...I never voted for anything like that, never heard of a "poll" for it...I think alcohol should be taxed also. Why are the smokers just taxed? I am sure there are plenty of "drinkers" to be taxed to help raise money for the state..

YES, I think we need to tax cigarettes. They are killing our people whether we smoke or not. Everyone in my family smokes but me. I have lungs of a 60 yr. old woman. I'm not 38 yet. So YES i think we need this tax. maybe it will encourage more people to quit or keep kids from starting. And I LOVE it when another city posts a NO SMOKING in our town sign. I would love to see knott county follow their lead.
