Beshear Touts Energy Production And Environmental Protection

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Governor-elect Steve Beshear says Kentucky can have it both ways - as a leader in coal production and environmental protection.

Beshear said during a speech to an energy efficiency conference that he wants to make both priorities when he takes office next month.

Beshear says he doesn't believe that the two are mutually exclusive topics.

He says he wants Kentucky's coal reserves to play a part in his efforts to make the state a national leader in energy production.

To do that, he said, Kentucky needs to invest in clean-coal technology to curtail carbon dioxide emissions. Scientists say CO2 is a major contributor to climate change.
