Health Department Offers More Flu Shots To Residents

Less than a week after the first confirmed case of influenza is reported in Lexington, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is offering more opportunities for Fayette County residents to get flu shots.

As part of National Influenza Vaccination Week, the health department will offer a special clinic 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at the Public Health Clinic at 805 Newtown Circle. Extra nurses will be on hand that day to accommodate people who have not yet received a flu shot.

In addition, two community flu shot clinics have already been scheduled for December:

• 9 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, Dec. 5, Senior Citizens Center, 1530 Nicholasville Road;
• 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Lexington Green; and
• 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, Crestwood Christian Church, 1882 Bellefonte Drive.

More community clinics are being planned for December, and the health department provides flu shots 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at its Public Health Clinic at 805 Newtown Circle. Shots cost $20, and Medicaid, Medicare B, cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.

Flu shots are recommended to protect Kentuckians 65 and older; all children age six months to 23 months; and individuals with a chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer, asthma or diabetes. Health officials strongly suggest that children aged 24-59 months and healthy people age 50 to 64 years also receive flu immunizations.
