Cell Phone Tower Copper Theft

A crime alert in Clark County, where police are looking for a copper thief.

Workers at the Verizon tower on US 60 made the discovery this morning when they arrived at work.

Verizon officials won't say how much copper was stolen.

They do tell us, however, that cell phone service will not be interrupted.

The price of copper has gone up five-fold in the last few years. Back in 2003, copper sold for $.70 a pound. Now, it's $3 a pound.

My husband is a Verizon employee and he helps put these cell sites in in the Kentucky/Ohio/West Virginia are It takes about 2 days with a crew of 4 employees to complete one site. All that hard work and then they usually find 1 or 2 a month that have been completely stripped and they have to redo them. I am stil to wonder why they don't put cameras on their buildings. Seems to me they would lose less money by installing cameras than to pay each employee 30.00 an hour to install and replace the copper. Crazy. It would help put the theives behind bars.

I hope the law catch these punks and when they do, the judge needs to put them away for a while to let them think about it. Oh I say 10-15 years!!!! If the judicial system would step up and start punishing convicts then we'd see a lot less of these types of things.
