Police: Georgetown Student Took Own Life

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) - A State Police review of the investigation into the death of a Georgetown College student has reached the same finding -- suicide.

Eighteen-year-old Remy Okonkwo was found hanged in a fraternity dormitory in March.

Police in Georgetown investigated and declared the case a suicide.

In a letter dated Monday, KSP Major Mike Sapp wrote to Georgetown Mayor Karen Tingle-Sames, stating the state agency reviewed the local investigation and concurred.

Okonkwo's family and the Justice Resource Center in Louisville asked the mayor for further investigation in September.

The Reverend Louis Coleman of the center says the state police didn't do what the family asked, but simply reviewed the investigation already done. Coleman calls that unacceptable and says civil rights advocates will continue to press for answers.

The student's body was found in the kitchen of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Georgetown College is a small Baptist Church-affiliated liberal arts college about 12 miles north of Lexington.

Angie, it is sad for two reason. First someone lost their life in what has been determined by professionals as a suicide. Secondly, it's sad that because it was ruled a suicide, now the racial card is being played. It is sad.

As one of Remy's fraternity brothers, it hurts me to see this issue is still at large. Remy had demons that none of us knew about, and though i wish everyday that he had confided in someone, i feel its time to lay this issue to rest. Though i cant imagine the pain and suffering of his family, he was a brother of mine too, and i miss him everyday. But i think his family should be satisified with the findings and results and focus on remembering the amazing person he was.

I grew up on the campus of Georgetown College and it's always been a VERY quiet and Christian like school where things like this definitely don't happen everyday. I'm sorry to hear about this kid taking his own life and I pray that others will learn from this and hopefully think twice before harming themselves.
