LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - After spending weeks at UK Hospital, then being sent to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center, a 12-year-old girl, critically injured in a crash, will be going home Thursday.

Wednesday afternoon, Jaden Jasper's family gave us an update on her recovery and shared with us their reaction, after her father, Jimmy Jasper, was indicted by a grand jury in connection to the crash.

"The family would like to thank the community for their outpouring of support and love for Jaden, and the family continues to pray for and support her father, Jimmy, as he faces the consequences of his actions," Jaden's aunt, Karen Miller, told WKYT Wednesday.

Just one month after the crash, Jaden's family and doctors say they never guessed Jaden would have improved this much. Her aunt even said that the day of the crash they weren't sure if Jaden would survive. They say she did more than survive and thrived.

"I'm just thankful to God, just really grateful," Miller tearfully told us.

She had several injuries to her head, brain, and left eye after the crash.

"It's great to hear that voice and to see her smile," said Miller. "She's smiling a lot more now, and she's still staying very positive."

Police say Jimmy Jasper was driving drunk when their car went through a wooden fence in Somerset. As of Wednesday, an assault charge is pending against him for causing serious injury to his daughter.

"He's continuing to repair and heal and mend and do what he's got to do," said Miller.

The prosecutor's office tells us Jimmy Jasper wasn't directly charged with driving under the influence because the assault charge carried a steeper penalty.

Jasper will answer to the charges on April 25 in Pulaski Circuit Court.

We are told Jaden might need one more minor surgery to correct nerve damage in her left eye. The family says she will continue physical, occupational, and speech therapy at home.
