Two Year-Old Falls Out Of Car Into Moving Traffic

A two-year-old girl is airlifted to UK Hospital after she fell of a van during moving traffic.
It happened at 3:19 p.m. Monday.
We're told the girl's mother was driving a borrowed van on U.S. 127 at Franklin Square; when the girl managed to slip out of her seat belt, open the van's sliding back door, and fall out getting caught under the rear tire of the van.
The girl was taken to Frankfort Hospital by ambulance, then flown to UK Hospital.
We do not know the extent of her injuries.
Police say the mother was driving on a suspended license and could face charges.
They are not releasing the mother or the child's name because the child is a juvenile.

Ok, to Joey, Bob and mom of two from Lexington, this is a public board but the PUBLIC doesn't need to hear your thoughts. Go to Lex 18 news or cnbc where it clearly states the child was properly restrained in a car seat. I have a little girl who will be three soon. And she tries to get her arms out of the straps of the car seat all of the time. I have to keep on her about this. However two year olds do get out of the car seat. Let's not forget the mother was at a busy intersection, so she would have had to pull over to put her baby back in the sea, . W By the way the little girl managed to get the van door unhinged at the red light and when the light turned green and the van was given gas the door flew open! That is how this horrible accident happened! The mother was not under the influence. Remember it was a ACCIDENT. Let's just be Thankful the little girl is alright. Thank you for the caring thoughts understanding, and common sense on the comments from the dad in Pike Co, and c in fk

Don't think this can't happen to you. I am a very good mother..and most say over-protective!! My daughter thought because I stopped at the pedestrian crossing at the supermarket that we were parked so she took off her seatbelt and opened the door...which she had never done before!! I was watching the people cross and when I took off she fell out. And, it was one of those times that someone neglected to tell me they took off the child safety lock...and they didn't put it back on when they got out. Trust me, if it can happen to me, it can happen to you!!!

I am also the mother of two kids in car seats, ages 2 and 3. Mine have never been able to get out of the car seat when they are properly buckled in. My son does try. Also I am wondering how old this van and if it has the child safety lock where, when used the door cannot be opened from the inside. Thes have been on cars for as long as I can remember and they are very effective at keeping the kids from opening the doors. I pray for the little girl and her family. I hope the valuable lesson is learned.

I fully understand how this child got out of her car seat...furthermore, I understand how she got the door open. Do you realize that many of today's new vans with driver side doors open with the push of a button??? How hard do you think these vans are for any youngster to open the door of?? I don't doubt this mother is responsible when it comes to the care of her child. After all, she did at least put her child in a carset. I can not begin to mention all of the times I see vehicles going down the road or across the parking lot with toddlers and sometimes babies unrestrained in the front seat of the vehicle. To me, that is irresponsible!!

I hope and pray this child is okay...and at teh same time that her IGNORANT CARELESS mother sees punishmentto reinforce proper future behavior. I have two children ages 5 and 2--they are in proper child restraints everywhere we go NOT JUST A SEATBELT. a seatbelt alone is not sufficient for a two year old--and how do you NOT NOTICE a door being opened?! you either just don't care enough to pay attention to your child or could possibly be under some type of influence....either way this is a TRAGEDY that could have been PREVENTED with simple common sense.. #1 CARSEAT #2 WATCH YOUR CHILD #3 JUST PAY ATTENTION!!!! how do you miss an OPEN DOOR IN A VAN?!

Doesn't make sense to me - how does a 2 year old manage to slip out of her carseat then open the door to the van and fall out in such a short period of time for the mother to not even notice when she was doing??? Yes, this is tragic but think realistic ...

I'm all for carseats and seatbelts, but let me tell you as a mother, 2 yr olds CAN get out of them. Mine did! Many times while I was driving, I'd look back to find one or both of them out of their carseats! I got so frustrated with my two that I ask a police officer to talk to them about the importance of staying buckled up! Sorry to say, that didn't help, they still managed to get out of them! I would immediately pull over and rebuckle them. Furthermore, my 2 yr opens the van door all the time! We are usually stopped though! The point is, accidents DO happen. Give this mother a break! I know I can understand how this might have happened! I pray the little one is okay and thank God she wasn't killed!

Those those who think people with rude or criticizing should keep them to themselves...this is a PUBLIC board to comment. Whether good or bad, the comments can flow freely. By the way, I agree with 5-0. You guys who see it otherwise are just as stupid as a parent who doesn't know their child is out of a restraining belt.
