Barber Sentenced To Prison

In Fleming County, a mother was sentenced today for the death of her 18-month-old son.

Toni Barber entered an Alford plea to manslaughter and criminal abuse back in October.

Her son, Kaleb Davis, was found dead inside a hot van in August of last year.

The defense team called 6 character witnesses, including Toni Barber's father, mother and brother, who all testified as to why the judge should grant probation, rather than the recommended 7 years in prison.

The prosecution called the detective who worked the case, and the paternal grandfather of Kaleb Davis.

Finally, Toni Barber stood before a judge and offered her own plea for leniency.

The judge sentenced Barber to 7 years on 1 count of second degree manslaughter, and 2 years on 1 count of criminal abuse. Those years are to be served concurrently.

A custody hearing is now scheduled for tomorrow to determine who will take care of Barber's surviving child.

Ms Barber wasn't convicted of Homicide, so don't expect a life sentence folks. I have known the Davis' family for many years, the grand parents are dear friends, and they are totally heart broken. This was a completely senseless act and thank god the other girl survived. I hope that at the very minimum she serves the full 7 years. For all parties involved , my prayers are with you ...

NOT AN INTENTIONAL ACT? SHE PUT THE KIDS IN THE VAN! WHY DON'T YOU HAVE SOME SYMPATHY FOR THE CHILD INSTEAD OF THE TRASH THAT KILLED HIM?

how can you leave your child in your vehicle and forget about them. I have a 18 month old and a 3 year old. I dont see how there is any possible way to forget them. Unless of course all you wanted to do was party and get drunk. This woman needs to be court ordered to be fixed. She would really have to change and improve her ways to show that she truly regrets what has happened and will not be so careless.

And people try to say dogs are evil killers. SHe should be fixed like a dog that doenst take care of its pups and caged in a hot van with other dogs like herself till she "suffocates". Stupid people kill more kids daily than any other thing simply because they have the kid then expect it to raise itself.

Seems to me killing people in Kentucky gets less time then anything else. Crazy.

This is not an intentional act. She is not likely to commit another offense. She should be probated. What was the Judge thinking. Obviously not following the LAW but pandering to emotion. Have some sympathy for the poor woman. Please. My God, she just lost a child. How mouch more punishment is really needed here?

I think it should have been more like 20 to 25 yrs. She is a known addict. Leaving a kid strapped in a van while you chase your next high is unforgivable. She shouldn't have ever have had kids in her custody.
