The holiday season is here and lots of people are shopping and traveling.

Police say you should be aware that the season of giving is also the season of taking for criminals.

While many enjoy the most wonderful time of the year, police say it's a busy time for criminals.

“We typically have a rise in thefts, people breaking into cars and houses,” Officer Ruey Couch said.

Police say some criminals are trying to make Christmas better for their own families.

“Some of them occur for desperation purposes and others because the opportunity is there. That's why we encourage everyone to be on their toes,” Tony Watts said.

Whether it be shopping or at home, everyone should be aware of their surroundings.

Police say some criminals keep a close watch for vacationing families.

Officer Couch says many the crimes are planned in advance.

“If they can't see it, they can't steal it. just keep everything locked up and secure,” Couch said.

Any suspicious behavior should be reported to police.

Officer Couch says the most common stolen items are electronics, jewelry, and prescription medications.
