Community Leader Is Honored

A special honor for an eastern Kentucky community leader.

Before the Hazard-Perry Central basketball game a large, new American flag was rolled down for the first time during the national anthem.

It was a tribute to Charlie Hammonds, a former city commissioner and businessman who died in October.

Hammonds always wanted a flag like this in Memorial Gym.

“Right before dad passed away, several of his friends got together and made that dream come true for him, though he's not going to get to see the flag come down, he did see a picture of it and dad would be proud of what's going on tonight,” Bob Hammonds said.

Several speakers paid tribute to Hammonds and police and fire officials saluted him as his family looked on.
