Former Student Who Gave Birth In Dorm Indicted In Baby's Death

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A former college student has been indicted on murder charges in the death of her daughter, who police say drowned in a dormitory toilet.

Kathryn "Katie" McCoy was also indicted Thursday on charges of tampering with physical evidence for allegedly giving birth to a baby girl on Oct. 23 and then concealing the body.

McCoy has pleaded not guilty. The 19-year-old former student at Bellarmine University is free on $50,000 bond.

The charges came after a baby girl was found in a gym bag in McCoy's dorm room at Anniversary Hall on Bellarmine's campus.

Police said McCoy gave birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of her dorm room and then let the infant fall into the toilet.

to all who have said you shouldn't judge this girl, or crucify... glad your mom didn't choose to drown you or you wouldn't be here to defend a murderer. murder is murder, no matter the reason, and this girl was a college student and likely wasn't uneducated or uninformed about her options. she was scared, she wasn't thinking clearly, and she made a mistake that will hopefully haunt her the rest of her life and for all eternity. may she repent and ask forgiveness in the Lord so that she may not spend eternity in hell.

Selfish girl. Her actions appear to be those of a spoiled irresponsible person. One that has had no responsibilities, no respect, and no concern for others. I am a mother, and I fell no pity for her. Life is precious..........

What a bunch of mean spirited people you all are! I really feel for the young lady in this situation. If seated on a jury, I would never convict a woman under the circumstances of giving birth and allegedly then killing and hiding the baby. We don't live in a perfect world people. Every situation is unique. You must remember we don't hear all the details in the media either. Granted, it is a sad situation, but there is no need to crucify the young lady.

As someone who wants so badly to have a child but may not be able to, I cannot believe someone could be so stupid, selfish, immature, and EVIL as to do this to an innocent baby girl. I would have adopted this child and given her more love than she could ever imagine. It breaks my heart and I hope that little baby girl's soul is up in heaven where no more harm can come to her.

I just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in September. She is my world, besides the Lord. I couldn't imagine hurting her at all. I try to make sure she is happy in every way possible. Her little innocence is overwhelming to me. I love her little face. If the girl didn't want the baby, she should have gave it to someone who would have wanted the baby. I would have taken her in a heartbeat. MY husband and I have so much love, we would have loved her as our own, not now, no one will, she will never know how it feels to be cuddled in momma's arms or feel safe with her dad. I hope she is save in Jesus arms, happy and loved.
