Family and friends say they are in shock after hearing one of their own, fourteen year old Ryan Hawkins accidentally shot himself during a hunting trip in Letcher County.
Police say fourteen year old Ryan Hawkins accidentally shot himself while on a hunting trip.
Family and friends say they are still in disbelief.
“Ryan said dad I'm going to walk on down here where he killed his deer last year. At that point, I guess when they were loading up Anthony said he's seen like these vines and he got tangled up in and a log and he fell on the gun, it discharged,” Hawkins’ Uncle Carter Sluss said.
Carter says Ryan died at the scene.
Those who loved him say they don't know how they're going to celebrate Christmas without him.
“He loved to work with kids. He was in the program big brothers and that's how they looked up to him,” Sluss said.
Family and friends will gather Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa.
The public is welcome to pay their respects from five to nine.
Ryan Hawkins' Funeral is set for Wednesday at 11 am at the Blaine Elementary School's gym.
Hawkins was in eighth grade at the school.
